10 interesting facts about the ultimate Tomorrowland festival

It’s July and music is in the air. The much awaited EDM is here - the whimsical music festival Tomorrowland! Brussels airport is flooding with hordes of festival-goers. This year it is the 13th anniversary of this ultimate music extravaganza. The festival just gets bigger, better and crazier with every passing year. Tomorrowland boasts of a huge lineup of highly reputed electronic dance music artists from across the world playing to a vast sea of music lovers.

To begin with, let us share some basic information about this global music festival

What? Tomorrowland is an electronic dance music festival hosted at Brussels, Belgium every year since its inception in 2005. It was started by two brothers Michiel and Manu beers and within few years it grew beyond leaps and bounds.

When? July 21-22-23 and July 28-29-30 of 2017.

Where? The festival is held at the small town Boom. It takes place at the De Schorre recreation area, with parks, beaches, forests and an amphitheatre all sectioned into different stages.

Theme? The theme of this global music festival is different every year and for 2017 the theme is called “Amicorum Spectaculum”. Meaning? “Amoricum” is the latin root for amicus meaning “friend”. And we need not explain what spectacle means. The show lives up to the theme- it is indeed beyond spectacular, one of its kind that brings together 4,00,000 music lovers from across 100 countries.

Line-up? Heavy hitters like Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Oliver Heldens, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Deadmau5, Marshmello and David Guetta, billed alongside underground dons like Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos, Seth Troxler, Luciano and Kerri Chandler.

Price? Ticket price varies depending on the ticket types. One day pass starts at 98€, 3 day passes starts at around 300-400 € and the packages (that include accommodations too) can go as high as 6000€.

1. Record sale of tickets

Being the most sought after music show, the tickets for the show sells out in minutes. This year even after extending the show to two weekends instead of the usual one, the tickets were sold out in over an hour. To be precise, in 64 minutes. Last year, the single weekend tickets were sold within 40 minutes. I know, this is hardly surprising for an out of the world global music festival like this.

2. It all starts with check-in

The Global Journey package for international festival goers includes everything from flights, accommodation, camping and festival tickets. This is the most stress-free way to enjoy the music extravaganza though it comes with a good price. Tomorrowland has partnered with Brussels airlines to bring people to Boom, with a “party in the sky”.

3. Pre-party bash

The day before the actual festival that is, the day zero, Dreamville warms up with a pre-opening ceremony called “The Gathering”. The camping site comes to life on the thursday before the festival. Almost the entire festival goers attend the pre-bash before the actual festival begins and few of the DJs play at this event.

4. Tomorrowland has it all

The minute you enter the place, you feel you are in a wonderland. Yes, it is sure a land of tomorrow. Ride the Ferris wheel, watch the artists perform at the floating stages, be blown away at the sight of helicopters dropping flowers on dancing ravers, enjoy the poker casinos, feel the soap bubbles in the air- you don’t get to experience all of this at any other music festival. Fireworks at Tomorrowland deserves a special mention. There is fireworks and laser shows at the end of every day at Tomorrowland. Each set has fireworks that go in sync with the tracks played on stage further adding to the never before like euphoric music experience. So staying till the end to watch the fireworks is worth it!

5.Drugs are a strict no-no

Drugs are prohibited at Tomorrowland. There will be frisking at the entrance and if you think you carry anything in your bag that shouldn’t be, then dispose it at the “Amnesty bins” at the entrance. Else if caught, you might have to leave the festival premises then and there.

6. How to survive the madness

There are chances of over-indulgence and dehydration. As the festival runs from noon through evening till night, make sure you stay hydrated. Carry a sunscreen to protect your skin. You will not be allowed to carry water bottles inside. So carry a bottle cap with you so you can refill once you buy a bottle inside (they remove the cap when they give you one). It is important to protect your ears too. Carry a good earphones that protects the ears at the same time lets the music in.

7. The 100-foot long secret tunnel:

In 2013 for the first time, the team dug a 100 feet long tunnel down a manhole all the way to the tech booth to accommodate all the cables from the main stage.

8. Drool worthy edible experience

Tomorrowland not just serves you good music, they treat your taste buds as well. You get to enjoy unique flavours from around the world at the stands. There are many good international options for food and drinks. The Dreamville camp area also has many food choices similar to the ones inside the festival. This might be the only festival that offers fine dining, that too one of them inside the main stage. Enjoy the live DJ from the main stage while you sip your favorite cocktail and relish the steak. Isn’t that one of an experience?

9. UNITE - the global connection:

Tomorrowland mainstage connects live with 8 other countries via UNITE. The countries include Dubai, Germany, Israel, Lebanon, malta, South-Korea, Spain and Taiwan. It is more than just a live streaming. With UNITE, you can experience the magic of Tomorrowland, enjoy the special effects of the show in Belgium and escape the reality.

It is all about bridging Tomorrowland with the rest of the world. There will a UNITE party with a special UNITE stage setting, live streaming plus live DJs on the UNITE stage.

10. The wristband is the lifeline

Your tickets for the entire show are your wristbands. You receive no replacement for it unless it doesn’t scan. Make sure you save them till the end. It also serves as an electronic wallet. So preload it with credit and use as required for food and amenities. Unused money will be returned.

Some quick tips that might come handy...


  • Prebook your tickets well in advance

  • Once you arrive, carry raincoats or ponchos as it rains almost every year during the festival. Additional things to carry include sunscreens and earplugs. Also an ID for identification purpose.

  • Carry your country flag, wave it around and join the spirit with your fellow festival goers

  • Do not spend the whole time at the mainstage, there is lots more to explore

  • Download the tomorrowland app that comes 2 weeks before the festival so you can plan what to do and what to miss.
